Up to 18 months to find a job

  • Indian applicants need an APS certificate before the visa

The Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) in New Delhi verifies your Indian degrees and marksheets. Without the APS certificate the German mission will not accept your student visa application, and many universities ask for it with the application itself.

  • Semester contribution of roughly €100–€400, often including a transport pass

Every enrolled student pays this fee each semester. It funds student services and, at most universities, includes a regional public-transport ticket, which makes it far better value than it looks.

  • Work up to 140 full or 280 half days a year while studying

This is the limit for students from outside the EU. Student assistant jobs at your own university are treated separately, and an internship that is part of your course does not count towards the limit.

  • Many master's programmes are taught fully in English

Engineering, computer science, data science, management and the sciences have the widest choice. German is still worth learning from day one: it decides how many part-time and graduate jobs are open to you.

  • Some public universities charge non-EU tuition, including TUM and those in Baden-Württemberg

Public universities in Baden-Württemberg, such as Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Mannheim, charge non-EU students €1,500 a semester. The Technical University of Munich charges non-EU students who started from winter 2024/25. Most other public universities charge no tuition.

Germany questions

Is studying in Germany really free for Indian students?
At most public universities, yes: there is no tuition, only a semester contribution of roughly €100–€400. The exceptions are public universities in Baden-Württemberg, which charge non-EU students €1,500 a semester, the Technical University of Munich, which charges non-EU students who started from winter 2024/25, and private universities. Living costs are the real expense.
How much money do I need in the blocked account?
€11,904 a year (€992 a month) at the 2025–26 rate. The German government reviews the amount each year, so we confirm the figure for your intake before you fund the account.
Do Indian students need an APS certificate for Germany?
Yes. Indian applicants need an APS certificate verifying their academic documents before they can apply for a German student visa. Apply early, because it can take several weeks.
How much can I work while studying in Germany?
Up to 140 full days or 280 half days a year, plus student assistant jobs at your university.
What happens after I graduate in Germany?
You can get up to 18 months to find a job related to your degree, with full work rights while you search. Then you move to an EU Blue Card or skilled-worker permit, and permanent residence can follow in about two years.
Do I need to speak German?
Not for English-taught programmes, but German opens far more part-time and graduate jobs, and B1 German can shorten the route to permanent residence. We recommend starting early.
What is the total cost for the first year?
Roughly the blocked-account amount for living costs, plus semester contributions, health insurance, visa and APS fees, flights and setup costs. Use our study cost calculator for a figure in rupees for your city.
