  • Offer of place from a provider that signs New Zealand's Pastoral Care Code

    Your provider must be approved for international students and a signatory to the Code of Practice for tertiary and international learners. It declares that the course suits you and your English and academic ability, and you show paid tuition for one year or the course, whichever is shorter.

  • Show NZ$20,000 a year for living costs, plus paid tuition and an onward ticket

    Immigration New Zealand asks for NZ$20,000 for each year of study (NZ$1,667 a month for courses shorter than a year), about ₹10.8 lakh at ₹54 to the dollar. A sponsor or guarantor can cover living costs instead. You also show a ticket out of New Zealand, or the money to buy one, separate from your living funds.

  • The Fee Paying Student Visa costs from NZ$850, and insurance is a condition

    The application fee starts at NZ$850 (about ₹45,900) and the visa can run up to four years, normally matching the period you have paid for. Medical and travel insurance acceptable to your provider is required for the whole stay, except for PhD students, so we compare policies before you lodge.

  • Work up to 25 hours a week in term and full-time in scheduled holidays

    The weekly limit rose from 20 to 25 hours in November 2025. Full-time holiday work needs a course worth at least 120 credits and evidence of scheduled holidays, and you need an IRD number to pay tax. Your visa conditions decide exactly what applies to you, and part-time income cannot replace the funds you show.

  • The Post Study Work Visa gives up to 3 years, and from 16 November 2026 some graduate diplomas qualify

    It costs from NZ$1,670 (about ₹90,200) and you need NZ$5,000 in your name. Degree-level 7 or higher graduates who studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks can work in any job, while lower-level qualifications must be on the eligible list and the job must relate to your study. You can hold it only once, and you apply within three months of your student visa expiring.

Living costs run roughly NZ$1,500–NZ$2,500 a month depending on the city (about ₹0.8–1.4 lakh), with Auckland at the top, plus insurance. How much money do I need to show for a New Zealand student visa?

Does studying in New Zealand lead to residence?
Not automatically. Since 24 August 2026 the Skilled Migrant Category has three pathways: points, Skilled Work Experience (a job paid at least 1.1 times the median wage, with 3 years of relevant experience and 2 more in New Zealand) and Trades and Technician. A New Zealand qualification earns extra points, but the work experience and pay usually decide the outcome. We map your course to a realistic route before you choose it.
Can my partner or children come with me?
On the Post Study Work Visa, a partner can apply for a work visa and children can apply for student visas, if requirements are met. During your studies the rules depend on your course level, so we confirm what applies to your case before you plan around family joining you.
