When to apply for 2027: Applications for the 2027 intake ran from 1 February to 30 April 2026. Expect a similar window for the next intake, so plan 12 months ahead.

Kompass view: Do not plan around this one. Confirm India's eligibility on the government's list first, then treat it as a long shot.

Where most of the money comes from

University scholarships and discounts

The money most students actually receive is a tuition discount from the university: commonly 10% to 25%, often awarded automatically with your offer.

Typical award

₹5.4 lakh to ₹7.4 lakhA$8,000 to A$11,000 a year (about 20% to 25% of a typical A$42,000 tuition)

Kompass estimate from recent offers. Each university sets its own awards.

What to expect

  • Many discounts need no form: your admission application is the scholarship application
  • Some stack, such as the UNSW International Student Award with other UNSW awards
  • Marks and early application decide most of them
  • Some awards cannot be combined, so check each university's rule

Timeline

Scholarship calendar for a 2027 start

  1. 1

    12 to 14 months before

Check government awards such as the Australia Awards. For a 2027 start the window was February to April 2026.

  2. 2

    9 to 12 months before

Shortlist universities, and note which scholarships are automatic and which need a form.

  3. 3

    6 to 9 months before

Apply early. Several awards are limited, and early applications are considered first.

  4. 4

    April to May

The Sydney Scholars India round has opened in this window. Prepare your documents in advance.

  5. 5

    With your offer

Read the offer letter for any scholarship. Many university discounts appear there.

What strengthens your application

  • Apply early. Several Australian awards are limited and have no fixed deadline.
  • Choose universities partly on the discount you are likely to get, not only on rank.
  • Ask which awards stack. UNSW's 20% award can sit beside others.
  • Keep your marks and English score strong. They decide most automatic awards.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for the offer before checking the scholarship rules
  • Assuming a scholarship covers living costs. Most are tuition discounts only
  • Counting a scholarship towards visa funds before it is confirmed in writing
  • Applying to one university only, so there is nothing to compare

FAQs

Australia scholarships: your questions answered

Can Indian students get a scholarship in Australia?
Yes. Most universities offer tuition discounts to Indian students, and the University of Sydney runs a dedicated programme for Indians. Fully funded awards exist but are very competitive.
Do I have to apply separately for scholarships?
Often no. UQ, UWA and UNSW's Global University Award are decided automatically with your admission application. The Sydney Scholars India programme and the government awards need their own application.
Can I count a scholarship as proof of funds for the visa?
Only if you hold written confirmation of the award and it clearly covers the amounts you show. Ask us before you rely on it for your file.
Can Kompass help with Australian scholarships?
Yes. We shortlist universities with the best awards for your profile, build your timeline and check your documents. You submit applications yourself, and no consultant can guarantee an award.
