Federal Skilled Trades Program

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for people with experience in a skilled trade. Trades have been one of the categories used in Express Entry draws.

Who it suits

Is FST for you?

  • Electricians, plumbers, welders, machinists and similar trades
  • Tradespeople with a valid job offer or a Canadian trade certificate
  • Applicants whose profile is stronger as a trade than as a general worker

The basics

What Canada looks for

  • Qualifying experience in a skilled trade
  • The required English or French language level
  • A valid job offer or a Canadian certificate of qualification in the trade
  • Proof of funds, unless you hold a valid job offer and can legally work in Canada

FAQs

FST questions

Are trades drawn separately in Express Entry?
IRCC has used a trades category in its draws, and it was listed again for 2026. Categories can change from year to year, so check before you plan around one.
Is a job offer compulsory for FST?
You need either a valid job offer or a Canadian certificate of qualification in your trade.
