Express Entry manages applications for Canada's Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades programs. Once you are eligible and in the pool, the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) decides your rank. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) then invites the highest-ranked candidates in each round of invitations.

Core factors: age, education, language, Canadian experience
- Age: maximum points between 20 and 29, falling each year after 30 and reaching zero at 45.
- Education: up to 150 points (single) for a PhD; a bachelor's degree earns 120.
- First official language: up to 34 points per ability (single) at CLB 10.
- Canadian work experience: up to 80 points (single) for five or more years.
Skill transferability
These 100 points reward combinations: education with strong language or Canadian experience, and foreign work experience with strong language or Canadian experience. Reaching CLB 9 in all four abilities doubles the points available in these combinations, which is why language improvement often adds far more than it first appears.
Additional points
- Provincial or territorial nomination: 600 points.
- French at NCLC 7+ in all abilities: 50 points with CLB 5+ English, or 25 points otherwise.
- Canadian post-secondary credential: 15 (one or two years) or 30 (three years or longer).
- Brother or sister in Canada who is a citizen or permanent resident: 15 points.

Category-based draws
Many rounds now invite candidates from specific categories, such as French-language proficiency, healthcare or trades, as well as general and program-specific rounds. The score needed therefore differs from round to round. Compare your score with recent rounds on IRCC's rounds of invitations page before deciding your strategy.
Are CRS rules changing?
IRCC consulted in 2026 on reforms to Express Entry and the CRS. No changes have been confirmed. We will update this guide and the calculator if the rules change.
